What Is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus literally means a ringing and whooshing kind of sound going inside the human ear of a person. It is important to understand that most common Tinnitus is the is the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound.
Tinnitus is a health disorder which is characterized by the humming, buzzing, tinkling and clicking kind of sounds inside a patients ear. The sounds are internal to a person’s body and there is no external source causing this problem. As you may imagine, Tinnitus can be very annoying and cause great deal of frustration to those suffering from it.
Most people with tinnitus have some degree of hearing loss as they are often unable to hear external sounds that occur within the same range of frequencies as the other sounds going on inside their ear.

There are two types of tinnitus that we should know about and they are objective tinnitus and subjective tinnitus.
Tinnitus Symptoms
Tinnitus Symptoms may have the following characteristics; Ringing, buzzing, roaring, hissing or whistling sounds which are Intermittent, continuous, or pulsatile quality with the same or varying intensity. These sounds could be of a single or multiple tones and they can come and go.
A common tinnitus symptom is that the sounds become more annoying at night or when the surrounding is more quite and with less distractions. The sensation of normal internal events such as blood pulsing, heart beating and/or muscles contracting is another very common Tinnitus Symptom.
It should also be mentioned that occasionally tinnitus could be accompanied with hearing loss and vertigo.
Tinnitus Causes
Before we will go over the various tinnitus causes we should make a distinction between the two types of tinnitus that exist:
Objective Tinnitus
With objective tinnitus other people may notice the particular sounds which are originating in the patient’s ears. Objective tinnitus may develop because of muscle spasms that induce clicks or crackling sounds across the middle ear.
Some individuals experience a sound which beats in time with the heartbeat pulse which is usually referred to as pulsatile tinnitus or vascular tinnitus. Pulsatile tinnitus is generally objective in nature, caused by changed blood circulation or elevated blood turbulence close to the ear however it may also occur as a subjective occurrence due to a heightened awareness of blood flow inside the ear.
Objective tinnitus may be the outcome of damage to tiny nerve endings in the middle ear. This might be as a result of being exposed to noisy and intense sound as well as music or excessive wax build up inside the ear which often at a later time obstructs the nerves and results in this kind of complications. The objective tinnitus additionally develops as a result of loss of hearing due to the age factor.
Although tinnitus isn’t regarded as a serious or life-threatening condition, pulsatile tinnitus may, on rare occasions, be considered a symptom of potentially life-threatening circumstances including carotid artery aneurysm or carotid artery dissection and it may also suggest vasculitis, or more specifically, giant cell arteritis. Pulsatile tinnitus can also be a sign of idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
Subjective Tinnitus.
Subjective tinnitus simply means that other than the patient, no one else can hear the sounds the patient is experiencing inside his ear.
The most typical causes of subjective tinnitus tend to be otologic problems and these problems can also lead and cause loss of hearing. The most frequent cause is usually noise-induced loss of hearing which ends up as a result of extended exposure to high decibel sounds. It’s also essential to realize that tinnitus, together with unexpected beginning of the loss of hearing, might have hardly any apparent external cause.
Ototoxic medicines may cause subjective tinnitus either supplementary to loss of hearing or without having hearing loss and could increase the harm produced by long term direct exposure to high decibel sounds, quite possibly at dosages which are not by themselves ototoxic. Subjective tinnitus can also be a side-effect associated with various medicines, for example aspirin, and could additionally derive from an unusually low-level of serotonin activity.
It’s also a traditional side-effect of quinidine, a Class IA anti-arrhythmic. More than two hundred and sixty drugs are already documented to cause tinnitus as a side-effect. Oftentimes, however, absolutely no fundamental physical cause may be identified as the main cause for tinnitus.
Tinnitus also occurs as a result of discontinuation of healing dosages of benzodiazepines included in the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome. It might be a protracted symptom coming from benzodiazepine withdrawal and remain for several months.
Stress and depression are among the main tinnitus causes. Suffering from high levels of stress and/or depression are known to make people more prone to developing tinnitus and suffering from these sounds going inside their ears.

Tinnitus Relief & Tinnitus Remedies
There can be various tinnitus relief and tinnitus remedies which a patient can use as precautionary measure to overcome his tinnitus problem. The use of hearing aids is a big tinnitus relief to those people who already have lost their hearing power or are more or less at that stage. The use of amplification elements which are included inside these hearing aids helps the patient to amplify the outside and surrounding sounds to a much greater extent than those going inside his ear thus reducing his tinnitus problem.
Application of cochlear implants that utilizes electrical signals is also becoming a very common tinnitus relief these days. These electrical signals helps the patient hear only those sounds which are external to his body thus relieving him from the inside sounds produced by his tinnitus issue. Doctors often prescribe the intake of food which is rich in iron like green leaf vegetables and other foots that contains high iron content. Use of processed food, dairy products, fats, sugar, and excess of salts should be avoided.
Patients should cut out on alcohol and cigarettes which contain high content of nicotine and caffeine. Also coffee, chocolates and other drinking sodas like Coca Cola or sprite which are high in caffeine should be avoided by people suffering from tinnitus. All these are somehow linked to an unhealthy diet and lifestyle which should be avoided to make the various tinnitus remedies work effectively.
Even those people who have a deficiency of vitamin B complex are seen to be more prone to these disorders and health problems. Thus, intake of vitamin B capsules or any other source which gives you the enrichment of vitamin B should be paid attention to.
Meniere’s Disease
Many people are suffering from tinnitus because of another disease called Meniere’s disease. Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disorder that affects balance and hearing. Meniere’s disease occurs when a part of the ear canal, called the endolymphatic sac, gets swollen. This sac helps filter and remove fluid in the semicircular canals.
The exact causes of this disease are still unknown but it might be related to head injury. middle ear infection, syphilis, allergies, alcohol, fatigue, viral illness, smoking, stress or the use of specific medication.

Tinnitus does not lead to any serious health problem but indeed can be very annoying and frustrating for the one who is suffering from it. The majority of people suffering from tinnitus also tend to suffer from stress and depression due to the restless feeling they get from constantly hearing sounds and being disturbed.
All these precautionary measures if taken up properly can be very helpful and fruitful for the patients. Consulting a doctor on any slight doubt and confusion must be done. A person should give his best in fighting back this problem when it is only starting. With the preventive measures mentioned earlier, recovery can be very easy. People should be aware of such disorders, therefore, should even prevent direct exposure of their ears to loud sounds, high intensity music and all other harsh activities.
